Homepages

The number of Anime/Manga Homepages on the Internet is enormous. There's rarely any anime without a site about it. Their quality, however, varies. From simple Link lists to very detailed collections of information where you can see that the creator put love and work into it.

If you look for a site about a special anime/manga, I recommend looking for it in the Anime Web Turnpike or at Anime Pitstop. Those are probably the greatest collections of Anime/Manga links available on the net.

FTP and other Archives

There aren't that many FTP servers with Anime/Manga stuff out there. However, the average "Home User" of the internet doesn't even know that FTP exists, and that's really a shame. So here's a small introduction to it: FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is the only transfer protocol that allows transferring files from a client to a host computer. With today's browsers, you can use FTP, too, but only for download, and only file by file. Better use a FTP client (most common are WS_FTP and cuteFTP), so you will be able to do uploads as well, and you can download whole directories at once.

FTP account info is also distributed in IRC, usually in FServ-Channels.

Now here's a list of FTP servers with the required login info.

Hostname/address Subdir Remote Port User ID Password
ftp.swb.de pub/anime/pics 21 Anonymous E-Mail Address
ftp.sunet.se pub/pictures/anime-manga 21 Anonymous E-Mail Address
ftp.nsysu.edu.tw Misc/Anime 21 Anonymous E-Mail Address

Here are some other archives (non-FTP):

IRC

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a way to directly communicate with others via an IRC channel. In simple words, using an IRC client, you send what you want to say to a channel on an IRC server. All other people in the same channel can read what you have written.
Popular IRC clients are pIRCh, mIRC and xIRCon. These can all be downloaded for free.
For those of you who only know MS Chat... better get one of the IRC clients mentioned above. They are better, more professional. They're not that easy to handle (you have to know at least some basic IRC commands), but once you're used to them, you'll love them. Anyway, if you insist using MS Chat, please at least turn off "Comic Data Transmission", it's really annoying for non-MS-Chat-users.

So, for all you people new to IRC and those who have been using MS Chat till now, here's a list and explanation of basic IRC commands:

All IRC commands start with a slash ( "/" ) and can be executed when connected to an IRC server.
/listRetrieves a list of channels available on the IRC server you're connected to.
/join <channelname> [<key>]Joins the channel <channelname>; All channel names start with an "#". If the channel doesn't already exist, a new one will be created. If the channel is keyed, you must append the channel key after the channel name.
/me <text>Performs the text as an action. The output text begins with your nickname.
/whois <nickname>Retrieves information about the user <nickname>, including hostmask and ident.
/query <nickname>Opens a private channel to the user <nickname>. This conversation is similar to a normal channel, meaning it's running via the IRC server as well. There's another possibility, DCC Chat (usage: /dcc chat <nickname>). This type of conversation doesn't run via the IRC server, it's a direct connection between the two clients.
/dcc send <nickname> <filename>Tries to send the file <filename> to the user <nickname>. The recipient will be asked if he wants to accept the file or not.

Ok, this should be enough to begin with. You can learn more from the Help function. Now to some servers:

FServes

FServes are IRC scripts that allow users to log in via DCC Chat and request a DCC Send of files to you. Because you're usually not the only one who wants some files, the send slots are usually occupied and your request is being queued. So, if you want to download from a FServ, keep in mind that you might have to wait some hours before the transfer even starts (and if, for some reason, the transfer fails, you have to enter the queue again). However, some FServes are definitely worth waiting in the queues since they're serving fansubs of Anime series that you probably haven't even heard of yet.
Naturally, you have to know IRC basics if you want to access FServes, so read the paragraph about IRC first. Keep in mind that FServ channels are not primarily for chat purpose, so don't wonder if no one really talks.

FServes use so-called triggers to see if you want to access them. The most basic trigger is !list (unless stated otherwise), it tells all FServes in a channel to send you a notice with further info, like their access triggers etc. Don't ever use the !list (or any other) trigger in Chat channels, it will probably get you banned from that channel.
If you type the access trigger of an FServ, it will request a DCC Chat session where you can pick files, get info about current send and queue status etc.

Here are some Anime FServ Channels. Fansub groups often change networks for several reasons, so this list will likely be out of date soon.

Some of these Channels require using a registered Nickname. Some of the channels are also keyed to avoid spambots. You can usually get the password from the channel's description in the channel list. See IRC for further info.

Mailing Lists

For most popular Anime/Manga, there are Mailing Lists available. Their purposes range from general discussion of Anime/Manga to discussions about a special character of an Anime/Manga. Others trade pictures, videos and soundfiles.

I won't offer a list of Mailing Lists here. If you're looking for Mailing Lists to subscribe to, visit the Anime Web Turnpike or Anime Pitstop.
